College Move Checklist
Preparing Your Child for College—and Your Home for a New Chapter.
Sending your child off to college is exciting. Between packing, shopping, and preparing for the big college move day, it’s easy to overlook one important task—organizing your home for this new chapter. This college move checklist will help you declutter your student’s bedroom, pack smarter, choose the right dorm essentials, and prepare their room for its next purpose.
Kid's Bedroom Declutter
Cleaning out your child’s room isn’t just another chore—it’s part of one of life’s biggest transitions. Every poster on the wall tells a story. Stuffed animals remember childhood adventures, trophies celebrate years of hard work, and sports equipment brings back memories of weekend games and proud moments.
This is a bittersweet journey, and you and your student-to-be deserve to embrace it with a practical plan.
As organizing and decluttering professionals, we recommend starting with the student’s bedroom. Gather everything into one place before making decisions, then sort the items into these clear categories:
1. Sell, Donate or Recycle
As you review clothing, books, and old activity supplies, identify what no longer needs to stay in the room. Items in good condition can be sold at a garage or online sale, donated to someone who can use them, or recycled when appropriate. Keep a garbage bag nearby for anything that is damaged, expired, or no longer usable.
2. Keep & Store
Your son or daughter may still want to keep meaningful childhood items, even if they are not needed in the dorm. Trophies, keepsakes, photos, and a few special mementos can be stored thoughtfully for a future home or kept as part of your family’s display. Those items belong in this pile.
3. Pack for College
College expenses add up quickly, so reusing the right items can be both practical and budget-friendly. Clothing, shoes, bags, towels, and other dorm-ready basics may not need to be replaced. This pile helps you see what your student already has—and what still needs to be purchased.
The way you pack will depend on the distance you must go and the means of transportation you will use. But in general, it is not practical to take too many suitcases.
Suitcases are ideal for clothing, electronics, important documents, and medications during travel. Once your student settles into the dorm, however, collapsible moving bags and storage bins become much more practical for everyday organization. We’ve put together an Amazon Shopping List featuring products we’ve found especially useful for college moves and room organization. These storage solutions are practical, durable, and designed to make dorm life easier.
Dorm Room Essentials
Now it’s time to look around for the dorm must-haves. Instead of wandering the aisles wondering what you’ll forget, download our free Dorm Room Checklist and shop confidently.
It is a free PDF for you to download. The list contains everyday essentials necessary to make your dorm room or rented apartment cozy and functional. We divided them into easy-to-follow sections: Bedroom, Bathroom & Laundry, Learning Area, and Kitchen.
It does not include clothing, personal hygiene items, or jewelry – these are personal items and every student may have different needs and preferences. It does not include textbooks or technology items – for these depend on the type of study your child is going to pursue.
To make shopping easier, we also created a handy Amazon Storefront with well-reviewed, budget-friendly options that match the checklist. Use it as a starting point to reduce last-minute stress and keep the college packing process organized.
Repurpose The Bedroom
You’re excited for your student, who wouldn’t be? But you may also miss their daily presence, and walking past their old bedroom can make the transition feel more real. Instead of thinking of it only as an empty nest, consider it the beginning of a new chapter for your home.
Once the moving boxes are packed and the goodbyes are over, your home is ready for a fresh start. A deep clean can reset the bedroom after years of use, while recurring cleaning can help the rest of the house stay easier to manage during this new season.
